Sustainability and Care
At JUD, we approach things with care, intention, and respect for where things come from and how they are made. We keep our knitwear collections small and focused, working to refine each piece so that it lasts in quality, relevance, and wear. We believe in building slowly, adding only what makes sense, and making sure every piece earns its place.
Materials
All our materials are made from responsibly sourced, high quality fibers. Finding yarns that meet those standards and are close to where we're knitting can be challenging, so we're working with mills to develop our own yarns, spun in the same country where the pieces are made, with people we trust who share our values around labor practices and animal welfare. For pieces made in LA, we use yarns from the UK and Italy specifically spun for hand flat machine knitting.
Cotton & Cotton Care
The cotton we use is grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers and is 100% GOTS certified.
Cotton gets heavy when it's wet and can loose its shape. Use gentle organic soap, roll it in a towel to squeeze out the water, then lay it flat outside to dry.
Machine washing works too, wool or gentle cycle in a mesh bag. The spin gets rid of excess water without stretching it out. It takes longer to dry than wool, so somewhere warm with air moving through is good. Just keep it out of direct sun or the color will fade.
Wool & Wool Care
Our wool is mulesing free, from suppliers who care about animal welfare. Everything is processed using low-impact methods.
Wool is pretty remarkable and can clean itself. The lanolin in the fiber does most of the work. Air your pieces outside, or hang them near the shower to absorb steam.. The less you wash with harsh detergents, the longer that natural lanolin stays intact and the better the wool performs.
When you do need to wash, you can hand wash in cold water with very little organic soap and very little agitation so it doesn't felt or shrink. Roll it in a clean towel to get the water out, then lay it flat to dry somewhere with air flow.
Machine washing is fine if you have a wool program or gentle cycle. Use cold water, zero degrees, because 30 degrees or warmer will make it felt or shrink. Gentle spin, then dry flat with air flow.
Buttons
We use natural corozo buttons, made from tagua palm seeds. They're durable, renewable, and each one has its own grain and character.
Packaging
Orders ship in recycled packaging from EcoEnclose. Our cotton bags are made locally in LA from organic cotton. We use glassine paper for wrapping, it's recyclable and biodegradable. When we need plastic, it's 100% recyclable.
Sustainability is part of how we work, and we will keep adjusting as we learn and grow. We make special pieces meant to be worn and cherished for a very long time because, it is about owning fewer things that mean more. If you are no longer wearing something, pass it on, resell it, give it to someone who will love it, or just make sure it stays in use. Making things last is what matters most.
